Strong first period leads to Hurricanes victory

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A low scoring affair compared to Tuesday night’s 6-0 rout of the Moose Jaw Warriors, but it was a win nonetheless.

In front of an excited Friday night ENMAX Centre crowd, the Lethbridge Hurricanes posted a strong first period en route to a 2-1 win over the Regina Pats.

In fact, all of the games three goals came in the opening frame.

Jett Jones scored early at 2:03, off an assist from Noah Boyko to record his first goal of the season. At the 5:19 mark, Pats’ Austin Pratt was given a minor penalty for tripping, which put the Hurricanes on the power play.

They took advantage and at the 6:40 mark, Calen Addison – fresh off being named to Team WHL in the upcoming Canada Russia Series – scored off an assist from Dylan Cozens (also named to the Canada Russia Series team) and Oliver Okuliar.

Cozens was called for high sticking at 9:49, putting the Pats on the power play.

Zach Wytinck scored at 10:01 off an assist from Ty Kolle and Austin Pratt. When the first period’s buzzer sounded, it was 2-1 for Lethbridge.

This turned out to be the game’s final score. Seven penalties were called in the second period – four on the ‘Canes and three on the Pats.

The third period saw no goals, but referees called six penalties – three on the Pats and three on the Hurricanes. Of note were two penalties called on Cozen; interference (minor) at 1:58 and holding (minor) at 4:18.

The Hurricanes are on home ice once again tomorrow night, October 19. They host the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Moose Jaw will certainly be looking for redemption after Tuesday’s tough 6-0 loss on their home ice. Puck drops at the ENMAX Centre at 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Regina Pats travel up to Red Deer to face the Rebels tomorrow night.
