LETHBRIDGE, AB – An emotional weekend for the U of L women’s rugby team and the start to the regular season for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks basketball teams made up the weekend.

Here’s a look at some of the results over the October 18 to 20 period.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

After a string of exhibition games, the men and women’s basketball teams started the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 19) – both against Briercrest College.

The men’s team dominated Briercrest with a 112-77 victory, while the women didn’t do as well, losing 87-71. Both teams face Medicine Hat College this Friday, Oct. 25.

The women’s soccer team secured first place in the ACAC south division and secured a first-round playoff bye with a 7-0 win over Red Deer College (Oct. 19) and a 2-1 victory over the University of Alberta-Augustana on Sunday.

The men’s club tied with Red Deer, 0-0 on Saturday and wrapped the regular season with a 5-1 win over the University of Alberta-Augustana on Sunday to finish second in the standings behind SAIT.

It was a 50-50 weekend for the Kodiaks men’s volleyball team. They lost 3-1 against the SAIT Trojans Friday (Oct. 18) before redeeming themselves Saturday with a 3-0 win to start the regular season at 1-1.

The same could be said for the women’s side. They lost 3 sets to one on Friday before a 3-0 win Saturday to begin their season with a record of 1-1.

The volleyball teams face Olds College the first weekend of November.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The big story at the U of L was the women’s rugby team in the Canada West Women’s Rugby Championship. This year’s tournament was in Lethbridge, but the home team couldn’t get it done.

A close 8-7 loss to the University of Calgary on Friday (Oct. 18) sent the ‘Horns to the third place game on Sunday, up against the University of Victoria Vikes.

The Vikes held strong to win 51-14 at the U of L Community Stadium, giving the Pronghorns a fourth-place finish. The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the U of C Dinos 26-12 Sunday to capture their first Canada West championship.

The women’s hockey team lost 2-1 to the University of Saskatchewan Friday, before a 2-1 win against the Huskie on Saturday. The women’s club faces the University of Alberta Pandas this Friday (Oct. 25).

The men’s team lost 5-0 against the Huskies, while Saturday’s game ended in an 8-3 loss to the U of Saskatchewan. The men’s team is back at home Friday against the University of Alberta.

It was a tough ending to the season for the men’s soccer team – who will not be competing in the playoffs. They tied with MacEwan University in Edmonton Saturday. Final score was 1-1.

In their season closer Sunday, they lost 2-0 against the University of Alberta.

A 1-1 tie with the University of Winnipeg on Friday helped the women’s team secure a playoff spot, but they fell 2-0 against the University of Manitoba in their regular season finale Saturday.
