FortisAlberta 2017 Earth Hour Challenge includes a local winner
CALGARY – A local village ranked among the top-3 winners in last weekend’s Earth Hour Challenge.
Last Saturday, 29 communities within Fortis Alberta’s service area took part in the challenge, which ran from 8:30 to 9:30-pm.
During that time span, the Village of Barons was able to reduce its collective electrical consumption by 13 per cent, putting the community in second place among the 29. For that showing, it will receive a $2,500 grant.
First place went to the Village of Longview, which recorded a 31 per cent decrease in consumption, to win a $5,000 grant. The third place $1,500 grant goes to the Town of Mayerthorpe, which posted an 11 per cent drop in consumption.
Winners of the Earth Hour grants, were determined based on the community’s electrical consumption during Earth Hour, in comparison to the same hour on the previous Saturday. The percentage decrease was used to determine the winners of the grants.
Each community was permitted to develop their own plan for reducing energy consumption during the designated time period. For the most part, residents were encouraged to take part in community-wide events, turning off unnecessary lights and limiting use of electrical appliances.
The following is the top ten finishers from the 29 communities who participated in the challenge:
