Stasiuk family appeals for information on missing Stanley Cup Rolex

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A important piece of sports history has gone missing, and the family of a local hockey legend is hoping to find it once again.

Two -time Stanley Cup winner and former NHL head coach Vic Stasiuk went to Foster’s Jewellers recently to have a band replaced on his 1950s Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Rolex watch.

His son Vic Jr. says his dad went to the store to pick it up, after getting a call from staff that the band was in. Vic Sr. then left the store and his son says it’s likely he took a handi-bus home. When he arrived, the watch was gone. Now the family is wondering what may have happened to it.

A thorough search of the elder Stasiuk’s home has so far turned up nothing.

Stasiuk Jr. says his father, who’s now 90, has trouble remembering what may have happened to it, so the family is appealing to anyone who may have seen the unique watch, or who may know where it is.

“It’s actually a very plain watch. It’s kind of got gold on the inside of it, on the face, I guess? And there’s a (Detroit) Red Wings symbol on the inside on the faceplate. It’s got Stanley Cup Champions 1950….two or five or whenever, I don’t know. I don’t remember what it says exactly.”

His dad’s name may also be engraved on the back of it. It would also have a dark brown or black strap on it.

So far, the family has not reported the watch missing to Lethbridge Police; neither have they called pawn shops to see whether it may have turned up there. But Vic Jr.’s sister has made a social media plea on Facebook, which has been shared more than 400 times so far.

“We wonder whether maybe he left it on the handi-bus or whatever,’ says Stasiuk Jr. “Who knows?”

The timeline as to when exactly the Rolex went missing is also a bit muddy, but the family has contacted the Jewellery store.

“Foster’s phoned me and said ‘the band is in.’ So, we went to Foster’s (later) and they said ‘no, the watch isn’t here.’ That was about a week and a half ago. And they said, ‘your dad had it when he left here.”

The family is hoping that no one has accidentally thrown out the piece of jewellery which was in an old box.

Stasuik began his hockey career in Lethbridge and went on to play for the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. He won two Stanley Cups with the Red Wings and recorded 183 goals and 254 assists in 745 NHL games. He also coached the Philadelphia Flyers and the Vancouver Canucks.
