LETHBRIDGE, AB – Thanks to a $1,400 grant from FortisAlberta, the Lethbridge Public Library’s Crossings Branch will be the future site of a new toy library.

Part of the new items will be made by companies that have committed to considering best environmental practices in the making of their products.

“On behalf of FortisAlberta, I am thrilled to support the Lethbridge Public Library with a grant to purchase sustainable toys for this circulating toy collection. FortisAlberta is committed to supporting municipalities including businesses, schools, and libraries that are working to reduce energy consumption and minimize our carbon footprint,” said Kari Hyde, FortisAlberta’s Supervisor of Customer Experience and Energy Efficiency in a release.

“This grant for sustainable toys will ensure many children enjoy new and exciting toys while avoiding the plastic waste that comes with new toy packaging and delivery.”

The toy library gives families the chance to borrow new toys for their children. The Library stated in a release that “each time a parent chooses to borrow a sustainably manufactured toy from the Library, they sidestep plastic packaging and delivery trucks, and avoid contributing to the already vast amount of plastic waste in our province.”

“We are so thankful to FortisAlberta and their generous financial support aiding in the purchase of sustainably made toys for the new toy library at The Crossings Branch. As West Lethbridge continues to grow, we are thrilled to be able to o‑er more options to the children and families of Lethbridge that use The Crossings Branch,” said the Library’s Manager of Branch Services, Sarah Head in the release.

The FortisAlberta Save Energy Grant program offers grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the amount requested and total cost of a project.
