N-D-P leader Rachel Notley not ready to apologize for remarks

EDMONTON –– Alberta Opposition Leader Rachel Notley says the entire United Conservative caucus is in a conflict of interest over a bill that would fire the province’s election watchdog.

She says she is not ready to apologize for remarks that got her kicked out the legislature on Tuesday.

Notley and the New Democrats are asking the ethics commissioner to ban the entire U-C-P from voting on Bill 22, which directs that Election Commissioner Lorne Gibson’s contact be terminated.

Gibson is investigating the 2017 United Conservative leadership race — which Jason Kenney won before he became premier — issuing more than 200-thousand dollars in fines for fundraising violations.

The government has insisted the ending of his contract is about money, not the investigations.

Notley says the U-C-P legislature members shouldn’t vote because they benefit directly from the party’s electoral success and that this success could be jeopardized by Gibson’s investigation.
