Hurricanes take lead in Central Division with 11-2 win over Red Deer

LETHBRIDGE –– After posting a 5-3 loss to Prince Albert on Friday night, the Hurricanes headed to Red Deer for a match against the Rebels. By the end of the game, the Hurricanes had played 26 games and lead the Central division at 16-7-0-3. They also have 35-points, one point behind the league leading Prince Albert Raiders.

The game’s lop-sided first period left some wondering if the Rebels had actually shown up to play.

Three minutes into the first period, Koletrane Wilson began the scoring, off an assist from Noah Boyko and Logan Barlage.

The next ten minutes offered up a couple of tripping penalties, one for each team. Then, at 15:30, the Hurricanes took over.

Noah Boyko fired on the Rebels net, off an assist from Dylan Cozens and Chase Wheatcroft – score 2-0 for the Canes.

Thirty seconds later, D-Jay Jerome notched his 12 goal of the season, with help from Danila Palivko and Oliver Okuliar – score 3-0. With 30-seconds left in the period, Dylan Cozens runs his goal tally up to 17, assisted by Koletrane Wilson and Oliver Okuliar, making it 4-0 for the Hurricanes. And, with 15 seconds remaining, Danila Palivko shares the puck with D-Jay Jerome, who lobs it at the back of the Rebels’ net, making it 5-0 just before the buzzer.

Scoring in the middle frame didn’t get going until the midway point. The Canes took advantage of a power play, as Alex Cotton and Dylan Cozens stick handled the puck towards Calen Addison, who slapped it through the pipes, taking the score to 6-0 for Lethbridge. However, the game would not offer a shut-out.

At 14:05, the Rebels’ Cameron Hausigner, was able to get the puck past Bryan Thomson and put his team on the scoreboard – cutting the Canes’ lead to five goals. After that, the Hurricanes took control again.

At 17:40, a power play advantage saw Calen Addison make full advantage of the assist from Alex Cotton and Dylan Cozens, for a score of 7-1. And, once again, 30 seconds before the period ended, the Canes popped in another goal, this one from Justin Hall. The period ends with the Canes leading 8-1.

The puck barely hit the ice to begin the final frame when Noah Boyko was on it, passing to Logan Barlage who took the Canes’ lead to 9-1. Three minutes later, puck passing between Barlage and Justin Hall sent the puck to Calen Addison, who notched the Canes tenth goal.

By the midway point in the final period, the most significant contribution to the game from the Rebels had been penalties, including two five-minute majors to Christoffer Sedoff for fighting, and then a 10-minute misconduct.

With nine minutes remaining in regulation and the Canes leading 10-1, they weren’t finished. A power play opportunity offered a chance for Trevor Thurston, who took his shot and the score to 11-1. The final four minutes provided a second goal for the Rebels, courtesy of Ethan Sakowich, taking the final score to 11-2 in favour of the Hurricanes.

While the Canes lead shots-on-goal 37-28, the Rebels lead in penalty minutes 36 to 14.

The game’s three stars went to 1) Dylan Cozens, with one goal and four assists; 2) Calen Addison, who had three goals and one assist; and 3) Logan Barlage, who racked up a goal and two assists.

The Hurricanes’ next game in Wednesday (Nov 27) night, when they host Regina.
