High avalanche risk reported in Waterton Lakes National Park

WATERTON, AB – If you are planning to head to Waterton this weekend, officials are asking that you be careful.

Avalanche Canada is reporting a “high” risk of snow slides in the alpine and at the treeline, while the danger is said to be “considerable” below the treeline.

They say the area has received 50-70 cm of new snow in recent days, which was brought in by moderate-to-strong northeast winds.

This has created slabs that will be very easy to trigger.

“We are expecting to see a natural avalanche cycle at all elevations,” says Avalanche Canada.

The avalanche danger ratings in Waterton are forecast to stay the same for Friday and moderately improve at the low and mid-elevations by Saturday.
