Hurricanes down the Rebels 4-2

Dec 11, 2019 | 10:21 PM

LETHBRIDGE — The Hurricanes nailed their second win in a row, in spite of missing Dylan Cozens, Calen Addison, and Oliver Okuliar from the line-up. The trio are away for World Juniors. The team called up prospect Logan McCutcheon to fill out the backend.

The first period saw Red Deer out-shoot the Canes, but neither team was able to register a single goal. The period did provide a string of penalties.

At the 13-minute mark, Rebel Blake Gustafson laid a nasty hit on Nick Dorrington, which left the Hurricane centre sprawled on the ice. It earned Gustafson a five-minute Major for cross-checking and a game misconduct sent him to the bench.

Right after the buzzer went to end the period Rebel Ethan Sakowhich and the Cane’s Zack Stringer were both cited for roughing and Koletrane Wilson took a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The second frame got underway with the three players sitting out their penalties. The first goal came from the Rebel’s Ben King at 3:43, and it was a 1-0 game. From that point, the goals came in a succession.

At 5:24, Noah Boyko put one through the pipes off an assist from Logan Barlage and Chase Wheatcroft. A mere 20 seconds later, Justin Hall took another swipe at the Rebels net and single-handedly puts the Canes up 2-1.

Over the next three minutes, the Rebels found themselves playing short-handed on penalties for hooking and delay of game. Then at midway in the period, Noah Boyko and Justin Hall set-up a shot on a power play and Alex Thacker took it home, giving the Canes a 3-1 lead. However, one minute later, the Rebel’s Jace Isley was able to cut the Canes’ lead by taking he score to 3-2.

The remainder of the period was filled with another string of penalties, including five-minute majors for Rebel Ethan Sakowich and the Canes Koletrane Wilson, when they tossed the gloves and got into a scuffle. The period ended with the 3-2 score.

The final 20-minutes picked up where the last 20 left off – more penalties. In the first four minutes, Ty Prefontaine was tagged for tripping and Koletrane Wilson for checking from behind. Closing-in on the mid point in the period, The Canes’ D-Jay Jerome and Rebel Chase Leslie take it on the chin in front of the Rebel’s net and are both given a five-minute major for fighting.

With 90 seconds remaining of the clock, the Canes take advantage of a power play, with Zack Stringer netting his fourth of the season, off an assist from Justin Hall and Alex Cotton.

The Canes win the game 4-2.

Red Deer outshot the Canes 32-19, but all three Stars went to the Hurricanes: Noah Boyko, Justin Hall and goalie Bryan Thomson. The Canes are 19-9-0-5 on the season and their next game is Saturday (Dec 14), when they host the Calgary Hitmen.
