LETHBRIDGE, AB – Following a 5-4 overtime win against Calgary on Friday night, the Hurricanes were once again on home ice Saturday hosting the Swift Current Broncos, looking to build a winning streak to end 2019.

FIRST PERIOD

Lethbridge got the game started in high fashion, with a goal from Justin Hall 1:14 into the opening period. Logan Barlage and Alex Cotton earned the assists.

At 3:51, Lethbridge’s Zack Stringer was called for hooking, but the Broncos were unable to capitalize on the power-play opportunity.

Shortly after, Danila Palivko was called for unsportsmanlike conduct (7:19), once again putting Swift Current on the power-play.

Again, the visiting team was unable to score. Fortunately for Hurricanes fans, the home team was able to score a short time later. At 10:22, Trevor Thurston made it 2-0 for Lethbridge, with assists from Logan Barlage and Koletrane Wilson.

Not too long after, at 13:49, Barlage scored his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Chase Wheatcroft and Noah Boyko, to put the ‘Canes up 3-0.

Briley Wood (Lethbridge) was called for holding at the 15:46 mark before the first period buzzer sounded.

At the end of one, the score was set at 3-0 for the home team.

SECOND PERIOD

The second period began with a penalty, checking to the head, called on Swift Current’s Matthew Benson at the 3:48 mark.

Lethbridge used to cheers of the crowd to their advantage, with Jett Jones scoring his fourth of the season at 7:31, assisted by Koletrane Wilson and Chase Wheatcroft. That put the ‘Canes up 4-0.

The rest of the period was filled with no other goals, but rather blows of the whistle. Aiden Bulych served a delay of game penalty by Reece Klassen (Swift Current) at 11:05.

At 14:25, things got heated, with fists flying between Koletrane Wilson and Chase Lacombe. The scuffle led to a major penalty for both players.

Just over a minute later, at 15:51, Josh Davies was called for hooking, putting the ‘Canes on the power-play.

However, the home team was unable to capitalize. Before the period came to a close, Ty Nash (Lethbridge) was given a minor for kneeing at 18:36 and Ty Prefontaine was given a minor for holding at 19:05.

THIRD PERIOD

The final period started with Swift Current on the power-play, but they were unable to take advantage. Minutes in, the game was still 4-0 for Lethbridge.

Jett Jones kept his momentum going from the second and scored his second goal of the game six minutes into the third. Alex Thacker and Chase Wheatcroft assisted Jones’ fifth goal of the season.

D-Jay Jerome (Lethbridge) was then called for holding at 7:07 before Trevor Thurston was called for delay of game at 8:23.

Shortly after, at 10:54, Noah Boyko put Lethbridge up 6-0 with his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Ty Nash and Logan Barlage.

Following that goal, tensions were high as Dino Kambeitz was issued an instigator penalty at 11:31 – which led to a tussle with Kaleb Bulych.

Both Bulych and Kambeitz were issued majors for fighting.

Kambeitz was also given a 10-minute misconduct penalty. His instigator penalty was served by teammate Noah Boyko.

The fighting didn’t end there.

At 15:04, Matthew Benson (Swift Current) and Logan Barlage got into it, leading to an instigator call on Benson (served by Josh Davies), five for fighting on Benson and Barlage and a 10-minute misconduct on Benson.

That late-game fight signaled the end of the game – and a victorious night for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. When the final buzzer sounded, the ‘Canes left the ice with a 6-0 victory with one more game to go in 2019.

The Hurricanes travel to Swift Current Monday for a rematch with the Broncos.
