Lethbridge-Medicine Hat unemployment rate down in December

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The jobless numbers in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat area saw a slight drop last month, and the region actually had the lowest unemployment rate in all of Alberta.

In December, the unemployment rate for the economic region was 4.0 percent, down from 4.9 percent in November of 2019.

The next lowest rates were in the Camrose-Drumheller and Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake regions, both at 4.2 percent. Overall across Alberta, the jobless rate was 7.0 percent, compared to 7.2 percent in November.

Here’s how the unemployment rates were listed for each economic region in Alberta in December (November’s rate in parentheses):

· Edmonton: 7.4 percent (7.0)

· Calgary: 6.8 percent (6.7)

· Red Deer: 6.6 percent (6.5)

· Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House & Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 5.9 percent (5.7)

· Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 4.2 percent (4.3)

· Camrose-Drumheller: 4.2 percent (3.7)

· Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 4.0 percent (4.9)

In youths (male and female, ages 15-24), the jobless rate was 14.7 percent. For adults (men and women, ages 25 and up), the rate was 5.8 percent.

CANADA

Nationally, Statistics Canada says the economy added 35,200 jobs in December. Canada’s unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent, compared to 5.9 percent in November.
