Canes earn resounding 7-2 win over Swift Current

LETHBRIDGE — With the first win of the New Year notched on their sticks during Friday’s night’s 4-2 romp over the Hitmen, the Hurricanes were looking for another win Saturday (Jan 11) night when they hosted Swift Current.

The Canes went on to own the game with goals at regular intervals.

Koletrane Wilson opened the scoring at 3:38 with a short-handed goal off an assist from Justin Hall and Ty Prefontaine. Just over three minutes later, Danila Palivko and Jett Jones set up Zack Stringer for his sixth goal of the season.

At mid-point in the period Zack Stringer partnered with Koletrane Wilson and managed to slip the puck through a scrum in front of the Broncos net to Chase Wheatcroft. The teamwork produced a 3-0 lead for the Canes through the first 20-minutes of play.

The second frame offered alternating opportunities. The Broncos’ Jaxen Kaluski put his team on the scoreboard at 4:36. Just 90 seconds later, Chase Pauls planted his first goal of the season, putting the Canes up 4-1.

Half-way through the frame, Justin Svenson added to the Broncos’ tally, putting the score at 4-2. However, with three minutes remaining the period, Brett Davis took advantage of a power play to notch another goal for the Canes, who closed out the period with a 5-2 lead.

As the final 20-minutes of play got underway, Brett Davis skated forward again and took a pass from Oliver Okuliar and Noah Boyko, taking thee Canes’ led to 6-2.

The final goal of the game came at 12:34, as Logan Barlage tallied his 15th of the season, assisted by Justin Hall and Danila Palivko, putting the game score at 7-2 for the Canes.

There was a minimal penalty tally, with eight minutes against the Broncos and four-minutes for the Canes, who out-shot Swift Current 34-21.

With two wins in two nights, the Hurricanes are 25-10-2-5 in the standings, but are now third in the Central division, one point behind the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The next game for the Hurricanes is Friday (Jan 17) when they host the Red Deer Rebels.
