LETHBRIDGE — The Hurricanes extended their winning streak to three games Friday night on home ice, with a 4-3 OT win over Red Deer. However, their fortunes reversed Saturday night in Medicine Hat with a 6-2 loss.

The Tigers owned the first period, thanks to a hat-trick of successive goals from James Hamblin. The first shot on Cane’s goalie Carl Tetachuk came 12-seconds after puck drop. Less than four minutes later, Hamblin again slapped one through the pipes, putting the Tigers up 2-0.

It wasn’t until eight minutes into the period that the Canes were able to get a shot at the Tigers’ net but, no goal. The next nine minutes provided a series of alternating minor penalties against both teams.

Then, with 30-seconds to go, Hamblin charted a short-handed goal, and with it, the trifecta. The Tigers are ahead 3-0 to end the first.

The second period saw the Canes make it onto the scoreboard, courtesy of Dylan Cozens, assisted by Calen Addison and Ty Prefontaine. Just two minutes later, Dylan Plouffe added another for the Tigers, who were now up 4-1.

The remainder of the second frame saw a jump in penalties – 22-minutes in penalties, to be exact.

Hurricane Oliver Okuliar and Tigers’ Dylan Plouffe were both cited for Unsportsmanlike conduction. Then Trevor Thurston was tapped with a ten-minute Misconduct.

The final 20-minutes of action saw James Hamblin add to his game tally with a fourth goal just two minutes in.

The Canes’ Justin Hall fought his way to the Tigers’ net 90-seconds later and took an assist from Ty Prefontaine, to add a second goal for the Canes. The final goal of the game saw Ryan Chyzowski lobbed a short-handed shot at Canes’ goalie Bryan Thomson and the Tigers took a 6-2 win.

The Tigers out-shot the Canes 34-30 and picked up all three stars for the game. James Hamblin takes credit for four of the goals, including a natural hat-trick in the first period. Ryan Chyzowski and Dylan Plouffe picked up the other two stars in the penalty riddled game (26 minutes for the Canes and 14 for the Tigers).

The Hurricanes are 26-11-2-5 in the standings and embark on a marathon eastern road trip. Next Wednesday, the Canes are in Moose Jaw, followed by Regina on Friday and Brandon on Saturday night, then on to Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Red Deer. The next home game is February 8, against P-A.
