U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: January 17-19, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A busy weekend for Pronghorns and Kodiaks teams, with it being a victorious weekend in particular for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

Meanwhile, the U of L women’s rugby team competed at the Rugby 7s tournament in Edmonton.

Here’s a recap of the action.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The women’s basketball team had a great weekend, defeating Ambrose University twice in a row. On Friday (Jan. 17), it was a 66-41 road win. That was followed by a 70-52 victory at home on Saturday.

The women’s club faces Red Deer College on Friday, January 24.

The men’s team extended their win streak to three games, with a pair of wins over the Lions. Friday was a 91-83 road W, followed by a close 89-86 win in Lethbridge on Saturday. Like the women’s team, the men’s club faces Red Deer this Friday, January 24 in Lethbridge.

The men’s volleyball team also extended their win streak to three, with wins over Olds College. On Friday (Jan. 17), they won 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-17). Saturday’s victory was another 3-1 affair. The men’s gets a stretch of off time, facing Ambrose University on Thursday, January 30.

The women’s team defeated Olds College in both of their matchups this weekend. Friday saw a 3-0 rout of the Broncos (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) with a 3-1 win on Saturday (25-14, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18). The Kodiaks face Ambrose University on January 30 in Lethbridge.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The men’s basketball team bumped their win streak up to two games with a 108-79 rout of Mount Royal University Saturday evening.

The women’s team also earned a win Saturday, beating Mount Royal 75-56. Both teams face MacEwan University in Edmonton on Friday, January 31.

The Pronghorns’ hockey teams didn’t fare as well. The men’s club lost 4-2 against the University of Alberta Friday, before a tough 10-1 loss Saturday night.

The women’s team lost 6-1 Friday against the University of Alberta Pandas and 2-0 on Saturday.

Both teams face Mount Royal University Friday, January 24. The men are in Lethbridge, with the women’s team in Calgary.

U OF L AT RUGBY 7S TOURNAMENT

Kicking off the Canada West 7s Series Tournament – Alberta, the Pronghorns fought hard and put on an impressive performance.

They defeated the University of the Fraser Valley 36-0 early Saturday morning, before a dominant 41-0 win over UBC Okanagan shortly after noon.

Later in the afternoon, they met the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds – who proved to be their kryptonite. The T-Birds won a close matchup 17-14.

In the third-place match of the weekend on Sunday, Lethbridge enacted some revenge, taking down the Thunderbirds 15-12.

Ultimately, it was the University of Victoria who won in the tournament final, besting the host Alberta Pandas 24-10.

The Rugby 7s continues in two weeks. The UBC Thunderbirds host the second tournament in Vancouver from Saturday, February 1 through Sunday, February 2.
