PINCHER CREEK, AB – If you hit the slopes at Castle Mountain this weekend, you’ll be helping out the Australian wildfire relief efforts.

Australian-based company Riversdale Resources, which has recently set up shop in southwestern Alberta, will be donating $1.00 for every visit at the resort to the Australian Red Cross.

The Red Cross has been able to send in staff and volunteers to help residents of Australia – thanks to donations to its Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund.

Since June of last year, there have been multiple large bushfires burning across Australia.

As of January 14, the fires have burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares, destroyed close to 6,000 buildings and homes and killed at least 30 individuals.

Billions of animals have also been killed as a result of the fires. The disaster has seen support from around the world, with Canadian firefighters among the many crew members helping out.

Team members from Riversdale Resources will also be on-site to provide information on their proposed mining activities in the Crowsnest Pass as well as more ways to help contribute in the wildlife relief effort in Australia. Riversdale Resources is a division of Benga Mining Limited.

The initiative at Castle Mountain, being referred to as Australia Day, is taking place all day Saturday, January 25. The resort noted that many of their seasonal staff hail from Australia, and the day is a way to celebrate them and to offer support.
