LETHBRIDGE – The Hurricanes were in Red Deer Wednesday (Feb 5) night, for the final match in a seven-game stretch on the road. It was also the final meeting between the two teams in the regular season, as they provided a back-and-forth fight for the win.

Action opened at 2:59 with a holding penalty against Koletrane Wilson but, teamwork killed off the penalty. Within seconds of being back to full strength, Alex Cotton was at the Rebels net, taking the assist from Calen Addison and Dylan Cozens, to give the canes a 1-0 lead.

The next goal didn’t materialize until midway through the period and it came of the stick of Rebel Josh Tarzwell, to tie the game. The period ended with the 1-1 score.

The second frame also commenced with a penalty. This time, against Ty Prefontaine, at 1:57, for Cross Checking. From there, the wheels came of the Canes’ bus for a time, as Josh Tarzwell launched his second goal of the game, to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Just two and a half minutes later, Ben King made an unassisted attack on the Canes’ net, giving the Rebels a 3-1 lead and 60-seconds later, Keaton Sorensen added to the tally, putting Red Deer at 4-1 on the scoreboard.

At the mid point in the period, the Canes finally picked up the action and a series of goals came in succession. Logan Barlage made good on an assist from Oliver Okuliar and Brett Davis, to cut the Rebels’ lead in half. Another two minutes along and Jett Jones supplied his team with another point, taking the score to 4-3.

In the last 90 seconds before the buzzer, Dylan Cozens provided a short-handed goal to tie the game at 4-4.

The final 20-minutes got underway with two teams obviously fighting for the win. In the first minute of play, Zak Smith gave Red Deer the lead but, two minutes later, the Canes’ Ty Prefontaine was at the Rebel’s net, tying the score 5-5. However, it was a short-lived tie.

As another three minutes ticked off the clock, Ben King added his second of the game – and the Rebels were in the lead 6-5.

At the half-way mark in the period, the Canes were tapped with a bench penalty call – then Trevor Thurston pulled in a five-minute major for kneeing, as well as a Game Misconduct, giving the Rebels a 5-3 advantage.

The Hurricanes not only handled the penalty kills, but they came back to add two more goals – both were off the stick of Brett Davis. Davis’ first goal, at 16:59, was on an assist from Dylan Cozens and the second (at 19:11) was assisted by Oliver Okuliar and Logan Barlage.

The hard-fought 7-6 win went to the Canes, who outshot the Rebels 39-33.

Lethbridge is in second place in the Central Division at 31-12-2-5. The team returns to the Enmax to host the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday (Feb 8) at 7:00-pm.
