U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: Feb. 7-9, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A few teams are prepping for the playoffs, while others have officially wrapped their season and others still have a few more matchups to go.

All in all, it was a busy weekend in sports for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The women’s volleyball team lost its first two sets to Medicine Hat College Friday evening (25-16 and 25-15) but roared back to win the third 25-18, the fourth 26-24 and the final set 15-11 for a 3-2 win.

Saturday (Feb. 8) saw another 3-2 victory for the Kodiaks, with Lethbridge winning the first set 25-21, losing the second 26-24, coming back to win the third 28-26, falling 25-19 in the fourth and taking down the Rattlers 15-10 in the final and game-deciding set.

The Kodiaks are in Calgary this Friday (Feb. 14) against SAIT before hosting the Trojans on Saturday.

The men’s team extended its win streak to seven with two victories against Medicine Hat this weekend.

On Friday, they won 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21). Saturday saw a 3-2 win. Like the women’s team, the men’s crew is in Calgary Friday before hosting SAIT this coming Saturday.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

Knowing they wouldn’t be making an appearance in the post-season, the Pronghorns hockey teams were looking to end the regular season off with a bang.

The women’s team fell short, losing on home ice to the University of Calgary 4-1 on Friday evening (Feb. 7) before a 3-1 loss on Saturday in the home of the Dinos.

The men’s team also lost both of its season-ending matchups; 5-0 on Friday night in Calgary and 6-1 on Saturday evening in Lethbridge.

Both the men and women’s basketball teams are playoff-bound and ended their regular seasons with wins over the weekend.

The women’s team beat Thompson Rivers University 74-63 on Friday and 69-52 on Saturday in Lethbridge, finishing the season with five straight wins.

With a record of 11-9, the team sits in ninth place in the Canada West standings. They’ll face the UNBC Timberwolves next weekend for a spot in the Canada West quarterfinals.

The men’s team finishes the season on a six-game win streak. They beat TRU 86-77 on Friday before a 90-73 win Saturday night. Their 10-10 record puts them in ninth place in the standings.

The track and field team was at the Panda Open in Edmonton and athletes were quite successful, picking up eight podium finishes. 29 athletes are now qualified for the Canada West Championships.

Sandy Latrace earned two gold medals, in the 60-metre and long jump. Thrower Madeline Szabo finished second in the weight throw. Teammate Caitlyn Bailes finished fourth.

Laura Klinck placed fourth in the triple jump and Elizabeth Lajoie was sixth in high jump.

The men saw four podium finishes. Andreas Troschke finished first in the weight throw and Clayton Wong placed first in the triple jump. Freshman Jake Jessup finished second in that event.

Ben Ingvaldson placed second in the shot put and Xavier Crosby finished third in the weight throw. Braden Klippenstein ended with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw.

The Canada West Championships are February 21 and 22, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
