Recognizing violence against women: second annual Women’s Memorial March in Lethbridge Friday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Missing and murdered women, girls, two spirited and trans people are set to be honoured on Valentine’s Day.

It’s the second annual Women’s Memorial March in Lethbridge.

The initiative started in Vancouver’s downtown east side as a response to the murder of a woman on Powell Street in 1992.

Since that time, the march has become a Valentine’s Day staple in communities across the country and internationally in an effort to protest the high numbers of missing and murdered women.

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was released in 2019 and included 231 calls for justice to be addressed by all levels of government.

The inquiry revealed that Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than members of any other demographic group in Canada, as well as 16 times more likely to be slain or to disappear than white women.

The Lethbridge march is hosted by Lethbridge’s Sisters in Spirit Committee and they’re inviting all members of the community to take part.

The event starts at Lethbridge City Hall at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14.
