U of L and Lethbridge College Weekend Sports Recap: Feb. 21-23, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The season has ended for the U of L Pronghorns men’s basketball team. The club was just one of many post-secondary programs in action over the weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The men’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season on a five-game winning streak. Friday night (Feb. 21), they beat Briercrest College 93-74, behind 26 points from Brock Dewsbery.

On Saturday, they rocked Briercrest 83-63. Chase Bohne was LC’s leading scorer with 21 points.

The Kodiaks men’s team finishes the regular season in first place in the ACAC south division, with 20 wins and only one loss on the year.

The women’s team also capped its season with two weekend wins, following a loss to Olds College on February 15. They defeated Briercrest 87-76 Friday evening, with 19 points from Brook Baker.

On Saturday, it was a 94-85 victory. Kristen Barwegen scored 23 points in the win.

With a finishing record of 12 wins and nine losses, the Kodiaks sit in third place in the ACAC south division at season’s end.

The men’s volleyball team beat Briercrest 3-1 Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. Going into the post-season, the Kodiaks hold first place in the south division with 40 points. Next up are the ACAC men’s volleyball provincials February 27 through the 29.

The women’s team won’t be competing in the provincials but managed to end the regular season on a high note, picking up a 3-0 win over Briercrest Saturday in the last game of the 2019-2020 campaign.

Before that, they lost 3-0 to Briercrest on Friday.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The U of L men’s basketball team put up a good fight against the Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton on Saturday (Feb. 22), but ultimately fell 92-81 in the Canada West quarter final.

With that, their season has come to an end.

Colton Gibb and Jeffrey Rodehutskors each scored 16 points for the Lethbridge club, while Adam Paige led the Golden Bears with 17.

The number-one seeded Golden Bears battled number-four Manitoba Sunday (Feb. 23) and earned the 91-85 overtime victory to punch their ticket to the Canada West championship game.

The conference title matchup is set for next Saturday (Feb. 29) in Edmonton, with the Golden Bears battling the UBC Thunderbirds.

Alberta has also clinched a berth in the U SPORTS Final 8 national championship.

The men’s swimming team placed 17th at the U SPORTS championships in Victoria, B.C. The women’s squad landed in 23rd (last place) at the event. The UBC men and women’s teams won respective banners. It was the men’s team’s 18th national title and the 24th for the women.

Meanwhile in Saskatoon this weekend, track and field athletes competed in the Canada West championships. The University of Calgary Dinos men’s team and University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s team each came away with gold.

The U of L Pronghorns women’s crew finished in seventh place in the final standings with 38 points. The men’s club finished in eighth (last place) with 37 points.

The following is a look at the medals won by Pronghorns athletes on day one:

· Andreas Troschke in men’s weight throw: 17.47 metres (gold medal)

· Sandra Latrace in women’s long jump: 5.97 metres (gold medal)

In day two, Lethbridge picked up the following medals:

· Madeline Szabo in women’s weight throw: 15.39 metres (silver medal)

· Caitlyn Bailes in women’s weight throw: 15.29 metres (bronze medal)

· Sandra Latrace in the women’s 60 meter with a time of 7.63 (bronze medal)
