LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks continue to host the 2020 Murray Chevrolet Cadillac ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships and the U of L women’s rugby team is in action.

Here’s a look at what’s going down this weekend.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

It’s set to be an all-south division final four at the ACAC men’s volleyball championship tournament.

On Thursday night, Feb. 27, the host Lethbridge College Kodiaks defeated Lakeland College in straight sets. That means they will advance to the tournament semi-finals against the SAIT Trojans tonight (Feb. 28) at 8:00 p.m. with a spot in the finals on the line.

The Kodiaks are ranked second in the country. The Trojans, meanwhile, upset the defending tournament champion Keyano Huskies 3-1 earlier on Thursday evening. In their season series against one another, both the Kodiaks and Trojans each won twice.

Joining SAIT and LC in the semi-final will be the Red Deer College Kings. They defeated The King’s University Eagles in four sets and will battle the Briercrest Clippers – who beat north division leaders NAIT earlier in the day in four sets.

The Kings and Clippers faced each other four times in the regular season, with Red Deer winning thrice. The teams will hit the court at 6:00 p.m., ahead of the Lethbridge College-SAIT matchup at 8.

Consolation play starts at 1:00 p.m. today (Feb. 28) in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College. The King’s University faces NAIT (1:00 p.m.) and Lakeland will play Keyano College at 3:00 p.m.

Lethbridge College’s men’s basketball team competes in the ACAC championship tournament starting March 5 at the University of Alberta-Augustana. Medicine Hat College hosts the women’s basketball championship.

The LC indoor track teams are in Red Deer March 7 for the second Grand Prix of the season.

U OF L PRONGHORNS

The women’s rugby team heads to Victoria for the final stop of the 2020 Canada West Sevens Series.

The team sits in fourth place in the series standings but is only two points behind UBC for third.

They’ll face the University of Calgary Dinos tomorrow (Feb. 29) at 11:06 a.m. and UBC Okanagan at 1:16 p.m. The ‘Horns will wrap up their Saturday with a meeting with the series-leading University of Victoria Vikes at 3:50 p.m.

The semi-final and placement games take place on Sunday, March 1.

NEW SIGNING AND A PLAYER HONOURED

The Pronghorns women’s hockey team announced the signing of Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats captain Maddy McCleary earlier this week.

McCleary will suit up for the U of L starting in the 2020-2021 season.

Her signing boosts the team’s recruitment class to six players after commitments from Abby Soyko, Alli Soyko, Maddy Noonan, Emma Neff and Mallory Dyer.

On the hardwood, Katie Keith has been named the Canada West defensive player of the year. The basketball guard recorded 47 steals this past season, good for fourth in the conference.

She also grabbed down 139 defensive rebounds (second in the conference). She started all 20 regular season games and logged more than 30 minutes per game.

With this recognition, Keith has become the first Pronghorn to be named Canada West defensive player of the year and the first Pronghorn since Kim Veldman to earn a major conference award. In her senior season, the 2014-2015 campaign, Veldman received the Student-Athlete Community Service Award.
