Dylan Cozens slams 3rd Hat Trick of the season – but Canes fall 4-3 to Brandon

LETHBRIDGE — The Hurricanes were home to the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday (Feb 29) night, for the second game in a three-in-three weekend. The Canes’ pulled in a 5-4 win against the Central Division leading Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night.

The first goal of the game came courtesy of the Canes’ Dylan Cozens, who popped his 34th of the season at the 6:22 mark, assisted by Alex Cotton, Oliver Okuliar. It turned out to the lone goal of the period.

The middle frame provided significantly more action at the nets. Brandon’s Ridly Greig slapped the puck through the pipes at 3:31 to tie the game. Connor Guttenburg gave his team a 2-1 lead at 9:44.

However, Brandon’s one goal lead was short lived. Just two minutes later, Dylan Cozens notched his second goal of the game, assisted by Zack Stringer and Oliver Okuliar. The 2-2 score held up until the end of the period.

The final 20 minutes of play produced the most action, in terms of penalties. It began just a minute into the game, as Dino Kambeitz was bench for interference.

At 6:23, Brandon broke the tie with a shot on the Canes’ net by Marcus Sekundiak. Within seconds a fight broke out. Brandon’s Braden Schneider and the Canes’ Oliver Okuilar were off to their pens – both were cited five minutes for major was off to the box on a five-minute major for a fighting major. Okuliar was also tapped for roughing, which was served by Ty Nash.

The penalties didn’t end there. At 7:44, The Canes’ Trevor Thurston was cited for attempting kick the foot out from under an opponent and was hit with a double minor.

After the slew of penalties, a Brandon’s Cole Reinhardt took advantage of a power play to attack the Canes’ net, giving his team 4-2 lead.

The final penalty of the game went to the Canes’ Alex Cotton for interference, with five minutes still on the clock. Shortly after Cotton was out of the penalty box, he was on the puck, passing it to Dylan Cozens, who notched his third hat trick of the season, putting the score at 4-3 for Brandon.

The Canes pulled Bryan Thomson out of net for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately, the score remained as a 4-3 win for the Wheat Kings.

The Hurricanes now have 79-points on the season and are 36-16-2-5 in the standings. The team will be in Calgary on Sunday (Mar 1), for a 4:00-pm game against the Hitmen.
