KAMLOOPS, B.C. — It was an interesting first period in Kamloops Friday (Mar 6) night. There was five minutes of hockey and then 15 minutes of … penalty, after penalty, after penalty!

The Blazers’ Orrin Centazzo opened the scoring at 3:14 and 60-seconds later, team-mate Connor Zary tapped in another, to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

The Canes got in the action 30 seconds later, as Trevor Thurston took the assist from Brett Davis and cut the Blazers’ lead to 2-1.

Just seconds after tapping in his goal, Thurston was tapped for elbowing, beginning the 15-minutes string of penalties.

At 6:29, Kamloops player Zane Franklin was sent to the box for interference with Canes goalie Carl Tetachuk.

At mid-way in the period, Koletrane Wilson and the Blazers’ Montana Onyebuchi skated off to matching 2:00 penalties for Unsportsmanlike conduct. Unfortunately, two minutes wasn’t adequate time to cool down. The pair got back on the ice and the fists came out. They each racked up 5:00 minute majors for Fighting and 10-minute Misconducts.

While there was no goal action, the penalties kept coming. At 15:33, Dylan Cozens took 2:00 for Hooking. With seconds left in the first period, Cozens took another 2:00, along with the Blazers’ Sean Strange, this time for Roughing.

The buzzer brought the period and the string of penalties to an end, with Kamloops holding on to their 2-1 lead.

The second frame began on a promising note. In the opening minute, Oliver Okuliar netted an unassisted goal for the Canes to even the score 2-2.

It wasn’t until midway through the frame that Kamloops broke the tie, courtesy of Connor Zary. The only penalty during the period was a 2:00 minor for Kneeing against Koletrane Wilson.

The score after 40 minutes was 3-2 for Kamloops, who lead shots-on-goal 27-18.

The Canes got the scoring underway four minutes into the final period, with Alex Cotton taking the puck on the assist from Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison, to tie the game 3-3.

From that point, the remaining goals came off he sticks of the Kamloops players. Ryan Hughes popped in back-to-back goals at 9:35 and 18:12 – the latter goal was on an empty net. It didn’t end there, as Connor Zary pumped in the final goal with two seconds on the clock.

The Blazers took the game 6-3 and their next stop in Kelowna on Saturday night.
