LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: The RHL finals have been cancelled due to on-going concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus. Additionally, the Senior AA hockey provincials have been cancelled. More details can be seen here.

The Lethbridge Lightning are going for gold!

The team has qualified for the Ranchland Hockey League (RHL) finals after a big win against Siksika Sunday. Their first-round series with the Buffaloes was tough, with the Lightning earning a 4-2 win Friday (March 6) before a 4-2 road loss in Siksika Saturday.

That loss sent the series to a deciding game five on Sunday (March 8) afternoon.

The Lightning trailed the Buffaloes 2-1 after the opening period and 3-2 after the game’s second buzzer sounded. Going into the final frame, the odds were against Lethbridge, but they rallied to take control.

Brady Matson scored an unassisted goal to tie the game 5:10 into the third. Cody Berube played the late-game hero, scoring at 17:53 to send the Bolts to the league finals with a 4-3 victory.

On the flip-side of things, the Nanton Palominos beat the Fort Macleod Mustangs 5-1 Sunday to secure their spot in the finals. It will be the third year in a row the Lightning meet the Palominos for the championship. Game one is scheduled for this Friday, March 13.
