Lethbridge County warning of soil erosion

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – The soil in Lethbridge County has become quite vulnerable to erosion.

The county says that’s because of recent weather conditions, citing a cycle of freezing and thawing paired with windy periods.

Lethbridge County is encouraging producers to monitor their fields for erosion and to take steps to prevent any future issues.

Erosion can be a major problem for producers as it can cause severe damage to agricultural land and losses to crop production.

For each inch of topsoil lost to erosion, crop yield can be lowered by several bushels per acre, according to the county. Erosion also removes nutrients from soil, making that soil less productive.

The county says they have knowledgeable staff that can assist in the prevention and reduction of soil blowing due to erosion.

Staff can be reached at 403-328-5525 Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

It’s also been noted that recent windy conditions have caused some issues with sprinklers blowing onto roads. Producers and residents are being asked to make sure wheel-move sprinklers are tied down properly to prevent any damage or injuries on county roads.
