TABER, AB – Taber town council passed a resolution at Monday’s special meeting to enact precautionary measures to protect the public.

Despite the provincial government’s announcement Tuesday that Premier Jason Kenney is declaring a state of public emergency, the municipality said at that “there is NO State of Local Emergency in effect for the Town of Taber at this time.”

“This situation with COVID-19 is very fluid and Council is constantly monitoring the Government of Alberta’s recommendations,” says Mayor Andrew Prokop. “Based on those recommendations and in giving highest credence to the safety of our residents and staff, Council decided to make the resolution that it did today.”

“These decisions were not made lightly, but they were made to help protect our citizens, and we as a Council are thankful to everyone for their continued cooperation and patience as we deal with this ever-changing situation,” adds Prokop.

The town has enacted its Emergency Operations Centre as a precaution only and for the sharing and coordination of information.

The following closures and cancellations have been announced:

  • The Aquafun Centre, arena, auditorium, large/small ice, and meeting rooms of the Community Centre are closed until further notice
  • Coffee with Council for March 19 and 20 have been cancelled
  • Meetings for the Recreation Board, Arts & Heritage Committee, Municipal Planning Commission, and Municipal Police Commission are suspended unless meetings are urgently needed

The town’s Administration Office remains open to the public. Visitors are asked to observe a two-metre distance between themselves and staff.

“If you are sick or experiencing symptoms of cold or flu, please do not come to the Town Office.”

Whenever possible, residents are asked to pay their bills online, submit service requests online, and email or phone staff instead of coming to the office in person.
