LETHBRIDGE, AB – A 25-year-old man has been charged after colliding with a building while driving a stolen vehicle.

LPS say that on the morning of March 20, they responded to a report that a Ford Explorer had been stolen from a residence along the 4400 block of 40 Avenue South.

In the early afternoon, members of Lethbridge Police’s Crime Suppression Team (CST) observed the vehicle in the drive-thru of the Dairy Queen on 12 Avenue South.

The CST and patrol members used a pinning technique, but the driver attempted to flee the scene. In the process, the driver collided with one of the police vehicles.

The suspect continued to accelerate in an effort to get away, according to police, and subsequently collided with the side of a Motel 6 office building.

The driver attempted to escape police again, but ultimately “gave up” and was arrested. Two passengers in the vehicle were also taken into custody.

Following a search, police found a can of bear spray and located a key for a Hyundai vehicle that had been previously stolen and recovered the day before.

LPS say damage to the Motel 6 building and stolen Ford Explorer is estimated at $75,000 to $100,000.

25-year-old Anthony Douglas Johnston, of Lethbridge, is charged with two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, driving while uninsured, operating a motor vehicle while prohibited, flight from police, dangerous driving and possession of a prohibited weapon.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on March 24.

Additionally, 26-year-old Brandon Chase Kyle Healy of Standoff is charged with breach of an undertaking. The third occupant of the vehicle was released without new charges.
