Funding announced to boost support for children & seniors

OTTAWA, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced funding to support people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In a country such as Canada, no one should be left aside,” he said while speaking outside of his Ottawa resident Sunday morning.

Trudeau acknowledged that the past few weeks have been difficult for all Canadians.

He announced $7.5 million to hire more counsellors and trained volunteers for Kids Help Phone.

The PM says children, in particular, have had a tough time not being at school and not being able to see their friends as they normally would. Some might not have been in the best situation with their family as it is, so being at home could exacerbate that.

The 24/7 line can help youths with any struggles they might be faced with.

Kids Help Phone can be called at 1-800-668-6868 or texted at 868686. Online resources can be found at KidsHelpPhone.ca

Trudeau says another vulnerable group right now is seniors.

In addition to being at a higher risk of contracting the virus, many had already felt isolated before the pandemic started.

That is why he announced $9 million for the New Horizons for Seniors Program through the United Way.

Volunteers can check in with seniors about their physical or mental health and provide grocery delivery.

Trudeau promised to make further announcements in the near future of additional supports for non-profits and charities.

He says he knows that many organizations are struggling right now with both an increase in demand and a decrease in donations.

“Whomever you are, whatever you need, we’re here for you.”
