OTTAWA, ON – Health Canada is urging people across the country to avoid stockpiling on medication during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The federal government is recommending Canadians refill any prescriptions they may have in order to avoid going to a pharmacy while sick. However, Health Canada is advising people to not by more medication than usual.

“This will help ensure that all Canadians continue to have access to the medications they need, and it will also help prevent drug shortages,” read a release.

Patients are being encouraged to contact their health care provider to renew prescriptions ahead of time. Health Canada is asking health professionals to avoid prescribing or dispensing large amounts of medication than necessary, unless there’s a specific medical reasons to do so.

The agency says increased demand or stockpiling of medication can lead to local shortages.

“Health Canada has been monitoring the supply situation closely and will take any necessary actions in collaboration with companies, provinces and territories, healthcare professionals, and our international regulatory partners to help ensure continued supply of needed medications for Canadians.”

Health Canada has also taken steps to “speed up” approvals of medical devices and drugs indicated and needed to diagnose, treat or mitigate the impact of COVID-19. The agency is expediting access to disinfectants, hand sanitizers and personal protective equipment to help limit the virus’ spread.

Health Canada say it will continue to monitor the supply of drugs in Canada, while making sure that all Canadians continue to have access to the medications they need.
