LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has provided its latest update on COVID-19 transmission in the province.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says 754 Albertans have contracted the virus, an increase of 64 from Monday’s report.

77 of these are healthcare workers who had either returned from travel or who attended a curling bonspiel in Edmonton in early March. None were related directly to the care they were providing their patients.

One more death related to COVID-19 has been confirmed. The patient was from the Calgary Health Zone and resided in the McKenzie Towne Long Term Care facility.

This means that there are now nine Albertans who have died as a result of the virus.

Dr. Hinshaw says the most concerning statistic is that nearly one-in-10 cases of COVID-19 in the province are due to community transmission.

“These outbreaks remain worrisome. We know seniors and those with chronic health conditions are at greatest risk of severe illness due to COVID-19. We must all do our part and follow the public health orders that are in place to save lives.”

Alberta Health is tracking outbreaks in two communities. One is for Shepherd’s Care Kensington in thee Edmonton Zone. In Calgary, outbreaks have been reported at both McKenzie Towne Long Term Care and Carewest Glenmore Park centre.

The numbers of COVID-19 cases by health zone are as follows:

  • Calgary Zone – 453 (five deaths)
  • Edmonton Zone – 187 (three deaths)
  • Central Zone – 51
  • North Zone – 50 (one death)
  • South Zone – 12
  • Unknown – 1

For the South Health Zone, the number is unchanged since last Thursday’s update.

A total of 2,381 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the southern health region.

The regional breakdown is as follows:

  • Medicine Hat – five
  • West Lethbridge – three
  • South Lethbridge – two
  • M.D. of Taber – two

Province-wide, 49 people have been hospitalized due to COVID-19, 17 of which have been admitted to intensive care units (ICU).

120 have fully recovered.

In the coming days, Dr. Hinshaw says the province will put together guidance on how community organizations and non-profits can continue to work while keeping their staff, volunteers, and the community safe.

With several religious holidays coming up like Easter, Passover, and Ramadan, she and Premier Jason Kenney recently took part in a teleconference with religious leaders.

She is commending groups who have chosen to offer Easter services via teleconferences or web conferences. One church in central Alberta is doing their Easter service like a drive-in theatre where participants can safely listen from their own vehicles.

“We are all in this together and each of us must do everything we can to flatten the curve and keep Albertans healthy.”
