LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has provided its latest update on COVID-19 in the province.

Premier Jason Kenney says 107 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total now to 1,075.

Another five deaths in Alberta related to COVID-19 were announced, meaning 18 people have died from it.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says four of the deaths occurred at the McKenzie Towne Long Term Care centre in Calgary. The other death was for a woman in her 20’s from Edmonton.

“Someone asked me yesterday when this will end. We cannot say for certain, but we should expect that we will be responding to this infection for many months,” says Dr. Hinshaw.

The regional breakdown of the virus in the province is as follows:

  • Calgary Zone – 671 cases (11 deaths)
    • 24,330 tests
  • Edmonton Zone – 263 cases (four deaths)
    • 20,602 tests
  • Central Zone – 62 cases
    • 5,796 tests
  • North Zone – 57 cases (three deaths)
    • 5,150 tests
  • South Zone – 16 cases
    • 2,927 tests
  • Unknown – six cases
    • 1,703 tests

An additional two cases were confirmed in the South Health Zone. 16 people in the region have contracted the virus.

  • Medicine Hat – six cases
  • South Lethbridge – three cases
  • West Lethbridge – three cases
  • M.D. of Taber – two cases
  • County of Forty Mile – one case (new)
  • Cypress County – one case (new)

137 cases in the province are believed to be the result of community transmission.

Another 4,000+ tests have been completed over the last 24 hours. The higher number of cases confirmed is partially attributed to the greater number of tests being done and officials being able to tackle a backlog.

Kenney offered assurance that the rate of infections in Alberta is significantly lower than elsewhere.

“The rate of COVID-caused deaths per million at Alberta at just over four is [just over] half the global rate of 7.5 and far below the rate in the most severely-effected countries.”

To date, 196 patients have fully recovered.
