LETHBRIDGE, AB – Although the regular season was cancelled a few weeks ago, the Lethbridge Hurricanes still have reason to celebrate.

The team has been awarded the WHL Eastern Conference Business Award.

In a release from the Western Hockey League (WHL), they stated that the ‘Canes have successfully executed new ventures in order to strengthen their roots with fans and communities in southern Alberta.

The league said the hiring of a Fan Experience Coordinator has helped further establish the Lethbridge club’s vision for an engaging game-day experience.

“Implementation of intermission segments featuring skaters dressed in dinosaur costumes quickly became an online hit and convinced other WHL Clubs to follow the lead set by the Hurricanes,” read the release.

The league stated that the team’s boost in its digital content also became a focal point in their fan outreach efforts.

“Providing behind-the-scenes access of the players, the Hurricanes delivered unparalleled access to their players to build positive engagement.”

This past season, the ‘Canes saw a growth in their number of season tickets sold and an overall rise in attendance.

The Hurricanes also made an impact off the ice in the community, contributing over $163,000 to local communities and organizations.

The club provided presentations on leadership, anti-bullying, financial literacy and concussion awareness in rural communities like Coaldale, Magrath and Raymond.

Additionally, they connected with rural communities through attending minor hockey practices, helping build positive skills on and off the ice.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Thunderbirds were the Western Conference recipients of the WHL Business Award.
