South Zone COVID-19 cases nearly double in one day to 142

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced a sharp rise in confirmed COVID-19 infections around the province, the large portion of which are in the South Health Zone.

241 new cases were confirmed in Alberta on Sunday, April 19, bringing the total to 2,803.

An additional four deaths were announced, three of which are in the Calgary Health Zone and one in the North Health Zone.

While nobody in the South Health Zone has yet to die as a result of the virus, the number of cases ballooned from 77 on Saturday to 142 on Sunday. Nearly all of the new infections are in Brooks.

1,198 patients across Alberta have fully recovered.

The breakdown by regional health zone is as follows:

Calgary zone – 1,997 cases, 38 deaths (three new)
- 42,348 tests
Edmonton zone – 429 cases, eight deaths
- 31,347 tests
South zone – 142 cases
- 5,091 tests
North zone – 137 cases, eight deaths (one new)
- 7,785 tests
Central zone – 76 cases, one death
- 8,978 tests

COVID-19 cases in the South Health Zone are as follows:

Brooks – 102 cases (62 new)
Medicine Hat – 15 cases, nine recovered
Lethbridge – 11 cases, eight recovered
- West Lethbridge – six cases, five recovered
- South Lethbridge, five cases, three recovered
Cypress County – eight cases (two new)
M.D. of Taber – two cases, two recovered
County of Forty Mile – two cases, two recovered
Lethbridge County – one case
County of Newell – one case (one new)
