LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – A new procedure to keep citizens involved in local issues has been approved by Lethbridge County Council.

A release from the county states that during its April 16 meeting, council approved the new procedure that will allow residents to submit information for public hearings without having to physically attend council chambers.

Residents can submit their thoughts either by telephone, mail or e-mail, before and during the hearing to be considered prior by council prior to members deciding on a proposed bylaw.

Public hearings are required for an amendment to a Statutory Bylaw, which can include amendments to the Land Use Bylaw, Intermunicipal Development Plans, and Area Structure Plans.

“Lethbridge County recognizes the importance of following the recommendations of our province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, which includes social distancing and staying home when possible,” said county CAO Ann Mitchell, in the release.

“We wanted to ensure that our citizens can still participate in the democratic process by having their views considered at a Public Hearing, while keeping everyone safe from the spread of COVID-19.”

She noted that continuing business and operations at the Lethbridge County is important to council members and staff.

“We have been working diligently to find solutions to some of the challenges presented by the pandemic. This new procedure is just one example of our commitment to our citizens and stakeholders during this difficult and uncertain time.”
