Only one-third of COVID-19 cases in Alberta still active

EDMONTON, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its update for COVID-19 on Friday, May 8.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says, as the province gets closer to relaunching more parts of the economy, she wants to focus more heavily on how many cases are still active rather than just the total number of people who have tested positive at one point or another.

Out of 6,098 confirmed cases to date, 1,963 are still active. The rest have all recovered.

80 patients are currently in hospital, 17 of which have been admitted to intensive care units.

“It is encouraging to see these numbers coming down from last week because it means fewer people are experiencing severe outcomes from this virus,” says Hinshaw. “It also means our healthcare system has the capacity to handle potential additional COVID-19 cases if needed.”

These numbers are particularly important in deciding when more parts of the economy can reopen in accordance with the Economic Relaunch Strategy.

While there has been no firm decision yet, Stage 1 could begin as early as Thursday, May 14, which would include retail businesses, daycares, museums, more forms of outdoor recreation, and some personal services like hair styling reopening.

Another 81 new infections were confirmed across the province Friday.

One additional death was announced in the Calgary Health Zone, meaning COVID-19 has now claimed the lives of 115 Albertans.
