Calgary and Brooks set for next phases of reopening on Monday: Jason Kenney

CALGARY, AB – The provincial government provided a COVID-19 stage one update Friday morning.

The update on Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy focused on the cities of Calgary and Brooks. Ahead of stage one’s May 14 start, the government said the reopening process would be slower in both of those cities, as they have seen the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Alberta.

On May 19, Premier Kenney noted that Calgary and Brooks would receive more advanced notice as to when businesses could reopen. This came after restaurant and hair shop owners expecting to open May 14 were told with 18 hours notice that they would not get permission to do so in those two cities.

On Friday morning, May 22, Kenney said the province will be proceeding with the next phase of reopening of businesses and services in Calgary and Brooks on Monday, May 25.

“This means that on Monday, May 25, hair styling and barbershops will be permitted to reopen in Calgary and Brooks,” he said.

“Cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars can also reopen for table service at fifty-percent capacity this upcoming Monday.”

Kenney made a note for June 1.

“On June 1st, day camps – including summer school – will be permitted with limits on occupancy in those communities,” he said.

Post-secondary institutions will continue to deliver courses, however, there will be more flexibility to include in-person delivery once the existing health order prohibiting in-person classes is lifted.

“Places of worship and funeral service will also be expanded if they follow the specific guidelines that have been outlined and have already been the case in the rest of the province,” Kenney added.

He noted that although this is a positive step forward, COVID-19 still presents a significant risk.

The Premier is asking all Albertans to continue to follow physical distancing and all protocols set up by Alberta Health Services.
