In multiple days this week, Lethbridge & Cardston County add new COVID-19 cases

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its latest COVID-19 update for Friday, May 22.

Provincially, another 32 infections were confirmed, bringing the total to 6,800. Of those, 5,801 patients have recovered while 865 cases are ongoing.

45 Albertans are in hospital due to the virus, six of which are in intensive care units (ICU)

Another two people in the province died from COVID-19, meaning it has now claimed the lives of 134. These include patients in the Calgary and Edmonton zones.

In the South Health Zone, another seven people have contracted the novel coronavirus. This means that for communities like Lethbridge, Cardston County, Medicine Hat, and Brooks, there has been more than one day this week where new cases have been confirmed.

The breakdown by regional health zone is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 4,698 cases, 689 active
    • 97 deaths (one new)
    • 45 in hospital, one in ICU
  • South zone – 1,223 cases, 92 active
    • Eight deaths
    • Two in hospital
  • Edmonton zone – 524 cases, 58 active
    • 13 deaths (one new)
    • Five in hospital, one in ICU
  • North zone – 232 cases, 18 active
    • 15 deaths
    • Two in hospital
  • Central zone – 99 cases, four active

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,092 cases (two new), 52 active, seven deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 38 cases (two new), eight active
  • Lethbridge – 27 cases (one new), 10 active
    • West Lethbridge – 12 cases (one new), five active
    • South Lethbridge – 12 cases, Four active
    • North Lethbridge – Three cases, one active
  • Cardston County – 23 cases (one new), 15 active
  • County of Newell – 15 cases (one new), three active
  • Cypress County – 10 cases, two active
  • Fort Macleod – Five cases, two active
  • Special Areas No. 2 – Two cases, zero active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – Two cases, zero active
  • County of Forty Mile – Two cases, zero active
  • Lethbridge County – One case, zero active
