Hospitalization rates remain low as province reports 42 new cases of COVID-19

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta announced 42 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, May 24.

This brings the provincial total to 6,860 infections of the novel coronavirus.

The province stated that 801 cases are active, with 5,924 Albertans having recovered from the virus.

No new deaths were announced on Sunday. In total, there have been 135 deaths related to COVID-19.

Hospitalization rates remain low with 46 people in hospital, six of whom are in intensive care (ICU).

The following is a breakdown of cases per health region in Alberta:

· Calgary Zone – 4,747 cases (37 new), 629 active cases

o 98 deaths

o 36 in hospital, five in ICU

· South Zone – 1,232 cases (four new), 92 active cases

o Eight deaths

o Three in hospital

· Edmonton Zone – 523 cases, 55 active cases

o 13 deaths

o Five in hospital, one in ICU

· North Zone – 235 cases (one new), 20 active cases

o 15 deaths

o Two in hospital

· Central Zone – 99 cases, three active cases

o One death

o Zero in hospital

The province listed two active cases and 22 recovered cases in zones to be confirmed.

236,789 tests have been completed, with 4,015 tests completed in the last 24 hours.

At continuing care facilities, the province noted 69 active cases and 640 recoveries. 101 residents of these types of facilities have died.

Below is a breakdown for the South Health Zone, which includes Lethbridge:

· Brooks – 1,095 cases, 51 active, seven deaths

· Medicine Hat – 40 cases (two new), eight active

· Lethbridge – 27 cases, nine active

o West Lethbridge – 12 cases, five active

o South Lethbridge – 12 cases, three active

o North Lethbridge – Three cases, one active

· Cardston County – 24 cases (one new), 15 active

· County of Newell – 15 cases, two active

· Cypress County – 13 cases (one new), five active

· Fort Macleod – Five cases, one active

· *Special Area No. 2 – Two cases, zero active, one death

· M.D. of Taber – Two cases, zero active

· County of Forty Mile – Two cases, zero active

· Lethbridge County – One case, zero active

*Special Area No. 2 is located just above the County of Newell and Cypress County on Alberta Health Services’ regional map.

As previously noted, the cities of Calgary and Brooks will be permitted to reopen more businesses as part of the government’s Stage One relaunch strategy on Monday. More details can be found here.

Additionally on Monday, May 25, some Albertans will have access to more health services. This includes non-urgent surgeries that require stays in hospitals.

Voluntary testing for asymptomatic staff and residents in long-term care and some designated supportive living facilities will begin on May 25.

Maternity services will resume at the South Calgary Campus and High River Hospital on June 3.
