Alberta Beef Producers’ host virtual meeting on June 11

Jun 10, 2020 | 4:11 PM

CALGARY, AB. — Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) will host a producer town hall on Thursday, (June 11) at 7 pm.

This virtual event is intended for cattle and beef producers, to hear updates from the Alberta Beef Producer’s Chair, Kelly Smith-Fraser, the Alberta Cattle Feeders Association and the Alberta Auction Markets Association.

Alberta Beef Producer’s finance Chair, Brad Osadczuk, will also discuss the western livestock Price Insurance Program….with a question and answer period following the presentation.

Producers who haven’t signed up for the insurance program, are strongly encouraged to purchase W. L Pip insurance, by the deadline of June 18, to protect prices in the fall.

Smith-Fraser says ABP has received a response from the Agriculture and Forestry Minister’s office, responding to the request for assistance for the cow-calf and backgrounding sectors.

She says the ministry has expressed an understanding of producer positions and are working to address their challenges with WLPIP and Agriastability. However, there is no commitment to provide funding to reduce WLPIP premiums or support for removal of the reference margin limits in Agristability.

Premiums are still high, but settlement prices are reasonable and the market’s volatility makes coverage a good investment. You can review premiums, settlement prices and check your eligibility at wlpip.ca.

You can register for the town hall, on the Alberta Beef Producers website. Go to a producers home page and the link is available under latest ‘news’.

Smith-Fraser also notes that after nearly 15 years with the organization, Executive Director Rich Smith will be retiring at the end of June and Brad Dubeau will be assuming the role of General Manager, effective July 2.
