Temperature screening to be required for travellers at Canadian airports

Jun 12, 2020 | 1:49 PM

OTTAWA, ONT – Starting at the end of June, airports across the country will start enhanced passenger screening.

The Government of Canada announced a three-phase approach that Transportation Minister Marc Garneau hopes will be able to limit the spread of viruses like COVID-19.

“My highest priority is the safety and security of Canadians and the transportation system. We have already introduced measures to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, including mandating face coverings, and publishing health guidance for the air industry. Mandatory temperature screenings are yet another measure in our multi-layered approach to help protect the safety of the travelling public and air industry workers.”

The three phases are as follows:

  • Phase 1: By June 30, all international passengers going to Canada will have their temperatures screened before departing for Canada
  • Phase 2: By the end of July, temperature screening stations will be placed in the departure sections of the Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal airports
  • Phase 3: By September 2020, temperature screening stations will also be placed in the Edmonton, Kelowna, Victoria, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto-Billy Bishop, Ottawa, Quebec City, and St. John’s, Halifax airports

Passengers who have an elevated temperature will not be permitted to continue their travel unless they have a medical certificate to explain a medical or physical condition that would result in a higher temperature.
