Deadlines nears for applications to Lethbridge’s Utility Payment Deferral Program

Jun 17, 2020 | 10:18 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents about the deadline to apply to the Utility Payment Deferral Program.

The City halted its standard arrears collection and disconnection process and stopped penalty fees for residential and small commercial customers earlier this year.

The decision was made to assist customers feeling the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deadline to apply for the program is Thursday, June 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Customers looking to take part in the program have to call Lethbridge 311 (403-320-3111 if you are outside of Lethbridge).

“We are also reaching out to customers who have arrears on their utility billing account to determine if they wish to take part in the program,” the City stated in a release.

Customers who have not signed up for the program and have utility billing accounts in arrears will be subject to penalty charges, and the City’s standard arrears collection process, beginning June 19, 2020.

“Once enrolled in the program, the deferred balance will be divided into 12 equal payments to be paid over the next 12 months,” the City explained in the release.

“The deferral amount applies to charges incurred during the deferral period set by the provincial government, March 18, 2020 to June 18, 2020, and does not apply to billing amounts charges on an enrolled utility customers’ invoice that were originally due prior to the deferral period.”
