LETHBRIDGE, AB– It’s safe to say the Lethbridge Fire Department (LFD) is prepared for any incidents on the Old Man River.

On Wednesday (June 17), LFD’s water rescue training course showcased techniques and tested each team member on what to do in the event a person or animal is in need of saving.

Recently two teenage girls passed away on the St. Mary’s River. LFD’s Brendon Pyne knows training like this is very important, judging by the recent events.

LNN spoke to Pyne on the importance of safety on the Old Man River.

Pyne added off-camera that since this year’s summer season will be impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, it will be vital to stay safe on the river.

He also advised anyone going near the weir in the river to be very careful going over it and or near it, particularly when the river is high and fast running.

There will be one more training session next week, to ensure training for all twelve water team members is up to par.
