STANDOFF, AB – The Government of Alberta has released its report for COVID-19 for Thursday, July 16.

120 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 9,114. Of those, 807 cases are still active while 8,142 people have recovered.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says this is the first time since May 2 that more than 100 infections were confirmed in a single day.

The new infections include 17 in the South Health Zone with Cardston County and Lethbridge seeing another five each.

A man at least 80 years old in Cardston County died as a result of the virus, which is the second death in the area. Along with another death in the Edmonton Zone today, 165 Albertans have succumbed to the virus to date.

69 people across Alberta are currently hospitalized as well as eight who have been admitted to intensive care units.

Approximately 8,200 tests were completed in the last 24 hours.

Thursday morning, LNN reported that the Willow Creek Hutterite Colony near Claresholm is under quarantine following a COVID-19 outbreak.

Dr. Hinshaw says, like any other community, Alberta Health works closely with cases, contacts, and community leaders. This work started months ago in collaboration with the Hutterite Safety Council.

“This is a volunteer body of Hutterite spiritual leaders, educators, volunteer firefighters, safety instructors, and medical first responders who serve their communities. I would like to express my gratitude to this council and to the community leaders who are working closely with public health to protect their communities both within and outside their colonies.”

She adds that COVID-19 impacts all communities, no matter how large or where they are located, so we all share a responsibility to ensure it is handled properly.

“It is critical to remember that stigmatizing those who get tested or those who test positive is a barrier to controlling the spread of the disease.”
