Milk River and Coutts implement water restrictions

MILK RIVER, AB – Two small towns in Southern Alberta are restricting water usage.

LNN previously reported that the concrete drop structures suffered critical damage back in May and that repairs were underway.

Until work is complete, the Town of Milk River and the Village of Coutts have implemented water restrictions.

The steps being taken by the local governments are as follows:

• All non-essential water use is prohibited, such as washing cars, sidewalks, pads, the exterior of buildings, and watering lawns
• Bulk water sales are prohibited
• All non-residential users of water will be requested to reduce hours of operation to contribute to the conservation of water

These restrictions are intended to ensure that all residents can receive an adequate supply of water during this time.

“The Town is no longer able to pump enough water from the river to keep up to the demand and that is why we are taking this step,” reads a joint statement from the two municipalities.

It is anticipated that repairs should be completed, and by extension, water restrictions should be lifted, in late September or early October.

Residents of Milk River or Coutts are encouraged to call their local governments if they have any questions or concerns.
