Local school boards set to receive millions in federal funding for COVID-19 costs

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two school divisions in the Lethbridge area have learned how they will use incoming funding from the federal government.

On Wednesday, Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced that $262-million will be received by Ottawa for Alberta’s various school districts.

She said the majority of the money would be distributed on a per-student basis.

The Lethbridge School Division is anticipating to receive $4.1-million.

They plan to use it for areas “such as staffing, adapting learning spaces, personal protective equipment, and cleaning and safety considerations.”

For the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, they are set to get $1.8-million.

A spokesperson told LNN that they will focus the funds on staffing to support the needs of their students. It will also be targeted at supplies such as personal protective equipment.

At the time of publication, neither school division had received their grants just yet.

They hope it will arrive within the next couple of weeks and will spend the time leading up to that coming up with more detailed plans on how it will be spent.

Every school division, whether public, separate, Francophone, charter, independent, and early childhood service providers will get a portion of the $262-million.
