COALDALE, AB. — “Wine, women and song — and I always enjoy women, especially when they can sing.“

That was the response from Alan Graham, when asked for the secret to his longevity.

Graham, a former Coaldale Mayor, born on September 3, 1920, turned 100 on Thursday.

He held three terms as mayor in the town, between 1953 and 2001.

To recognize Alan`s birthday, a parade, park and sing celebration has been planned for Sunday, September 6.

At 1:00-pm, all those who wish, can line their vehicles up on 14 Avenue in Coaldale, behind an RCMP escort vehicle (you`re free to decorate your vehicle). The cavalcade will process to the Gem of the West Museum parking lot on 21 Street north. Please wear a mask and join in from outside your vehicle, in a rousing rendition of `Happy Birthday`.

Graham feels the most amazing element of his life, is that he has lived through so many calamities, such as polio, which he equates to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

When asked what the highlight of his life was, he said there were too many to remember. His philosophy is: “You do the best with what you’ve got to work with.”

However, he says his life had a rhythm that included his enjoyment of a glass of wine, the company of a pleasant woman and sweet music.

“What more could you want?”
