More than 600 COVID cases in Alberta over the long weekend

EDMONTON, AB– On Tuesday (Sept 8) afternoon, Alberta Health Services released the report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers for the long weekend, which included Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw stated they are seeing a higher number of cases related to known cases.

619 cases were confirmed across the province over the long weekend, bringing the total to 15,093. Currently, there are 45 people in hospital, with 10 in ICU.

Of those, 1,692 cases are active and 13,154 people have recovered, and 247 have died as a result of the virus.

154 cases were on Sept. 4, 171 on Sept. 5, 137 on Sept. 6, and 157 on Sept. 7

Out of the 619 cases, there were only 9 new in the South Health Zone of the province

The bulk of the new caseload is, once again, in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 7,941 cases, 732 active
    • 118 deaths
    • 324,938 tests
  • Edmonton zone – 3,606 cases, 648 active
    • 66 deaths
    • 261,198 tests
  • South zone – 1,766 cases, 38 active
    • 25 deaths
    • 55,678 tests
  • North zone – 1,112 cases, 212 active
    • 31 deaths
    • 70,194 tests
  • Central zone – 629 cases, 52 active
    • Seven deaths
    • 66,848 tests

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,129 cases, three active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge – 162 cases(Three new), 17 active, two deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 63 cases(two new), 10 active, one death
    • South Lethbridge – 59 cases(one new), five active
    • North Lethbridge – 40 cases, two active, one death
  • Cardston County – 104 cases, two active, five deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 72 cases (one new), three active, two deaths
  • County of Warner – 61 cases (two new), two active, one death
  • M.D. of Taber – 39 cases, zero active
  • Lethbridge County – 38 cases (one new), eight active
  • Fort Macleod – 33 cases, zero active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 32 cases, zero active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 31 cases, zero active
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 26 cases, zero active, one death
  • County of Forty Mile – 24 cases, three active
  • Crowsnest Pass – Two cases, zero active
