Lethbridge property taxes due by September 30 to avoid late penalties

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents to pay their property taxes.

Property owners in Lethbridge must have their 2020 tax accounts paid in full by September 30 to avoid a penalty.

Earlier this spring, City Council approved changes to penalty dates and reduced penalties for 2020 tax accounts to help residents impacted financially by COVID-19.

As of October 1, any outstanding property tax balances will have a three percent penalty applied, which amounts to $30 for every $1,000 in outstanding property taxes.

The penalty is four percent on November 1 and five percent on December 1. More details here.

The city notes that the tax deadline and penalties do not apply to property owners who pay monthly through the Tax Installment Prepayment Plan (TIPP).

Those who recently purchased property and/or have not received a 2020 tax notice should contact the Taxation department at tax@lethbridge.ca. Late payment penalties will not be waived if owners did not receive their tax notices.

Cash, cheques and debit car payments are accepted by cashiers on the main floor of Lethbridge City Hall from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For those who have online banking can pay their taxes electronically using the 13-digit roll number located in the top right section of their tax notice.

Cheques and money orders (do not enclose cash) can also be dropped off using the drop box at the front of City Hall or the drive-thru drop box in the circle behind the building.

The city does not accept credit card payments.

Property owners can sign up to receive their future property tax notices by email or view their 2020 notice online through the MyCity tool at the city’s website.

An additional way to avoid late payment penalties in the future is to enroll in the TIPP, which reduces one’s tax with a 0.75% annual discount credit. Property owners whose 2020 taxes are paid in full can sign up for TIPP before October 20 to be enrolled in the program for their 2021 property taxes.
