Performing arts centre preliminary planning to be completed

LETHBRIDGE, AB– At Monday’s City Council meeting, a decision was made on what to do with the remaining money left in the Performing Arts Centre project budget.

Of the $375,000 which makes up the “Consulting Services Budget”, $147,000 is left to be spent.

City council voted 6-3 in favour of allowing the Performing Arts Centre Steering Committee to continue their initial planning.

For the already approved $6.8 million through Capital Improvement Program(CIP) projects, that money will go back into the CIP cycle for next year.

Councillors argued the performing arts centre project is just not possible at this time, going through a pandemic, and even argued whether to give the steering committee the remaining $147,000.

Councillors Joe Mauro, Ryan Parker, and Blaine Higgen were against the city giving the steering committee the remaining $147,000 and argued the money could go towards something different.

There has been much debate over the topic of the possibility of a new performing arts centre and lots of public feedback has been mostly negative.

The rest of the money will be spent on initial planning however the steering committee would like, and results will be brought back to council at a later date.
