COVID-19 case confirmed at Kainai Continuing Care Centre

STANDOFF, AB – The Blood Tribe has confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at the Kainai Continuing Care Centre.

The Blood Tribe said that immediate action was taken to restrict access to the long-term care facility to protect all residents. Staff members began work immediately to enhance their “already strict safety measures” at the site.

All families impacted by this have been notified. The Blood Tribe said contact tracing is underway.

“An outbreak in long term care facilities is declared when the site has one confirmed case in staff members or residents,” the Blood Tribe stated in a release.

At the start of the pandemic, health officials acted quickly to secure the Kanai Continuing Care Centre by implementing tight restrictions on visitors.

“In recognizing that our elders find it very difficult to live in total isolation, safety measures were undertaken to allow limited visitation of families to see their loved ones,” read the release.

The Blood Tribe said the facility is currently closed to visitors again.

“We ask for your patience and understanding as our Blood tribe Community Health Team investigates.”

Officials from the Blood Tribe Department of Health, Indigenous Services Canada – First Nations and Inuit Health Branch and Blood Tribe Emergency Management continue to take the necessary steps to contain the virus on the Blood Reserve.
