LETHBRIDGE, AB– Lethbridge recognized the start of Métis Week with an honourary flag raising at City Hall.

Métis Week is from November 15 to 21, 2020, and remembers the sacrifices of the Métis who continue to strive toward rights and recognition as a distinct nation.

Métis people across Canada pay tribute to the Right Honourable Louis Riel by holding a ceremony on the date of his execution, November 16th.

Ceremonies across the country symbolize the commitment Métis people share in striving for and promoting the visions of Louis Riel.

President of Lethbridge and area Métis Community Adam Browning says Riel is a person to be celebrated.

Browning says, living around Lethbridge, Métis heritage is prominent.

“Our community of Métis around Lethbridge encompasses several thousand people, we’re a third of the indigenous population in Lethbridge and for us the significance of this day and to be able to have this recognized at City Hall is a major step in reconciliation.”

The Métis Nation of Alberta will be hosting a multitude of virtual events through the week.
